Are you using social media?

More and more businesses are getting involved with social media tools such as LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook. These tools, and others like them, can lead to building business connections and potential new business opportunities. However, the trick is not just to follow the crowd, but to ensure that you are doing the right thing for your business.

The fundamental ‘rule’ when using social media in business is to use it to engage with people and have a conversation, not to simply sell your services.  Ideally social media should enable you to have more of a personality and it suggests that you are attainable and open.

There are lots of different social media tools out there, but perhaps the most commonly used for business are LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook.  Below are brief descriptions of each, to give you an idea of what they are all about and perhaps which you may feel suits your business best.

LinkedIn – Is a business-orientated networking site. It is mainly used for professional networking. Again, you have a profile page where you can display your career background, professional achievements and information on your business. You can join networks, groups and also comment on posts.

Twitter – Is a social media and microblogging site, which enables its users to send and read each others messages or ‘tweets’. Tweets can be up to 140 characters long and appear on your profile page. Twitter allows people to follow you and for you to follow others.

Facebook – Is a social networking site with more than 500 million users globally. The site allows people to create a profile page, send messages, upload photos and add ‘friends’. Additionally users can join various networks and groups.
